He scratched on his first throw, hit 155 feet on his second, added another foot on his third, and tacked on another foot in finals. Robert Dahl’s throw of 158 feet, five inches gave him second place overall at the Minnesota State Track & Field Championships on June 12 in Blaine. Robert is a senior at Cromwell High School and, along with a pair of Floodwood tracksters, represented the area very well.

Robert had a season best throw of 172 feet, 4 inches at the subsection meet in Grand Rapids. His throw set a new school record this year as well. Distances at the state meet were down for all competitors. The conditions weren’t as favorable as the previous meets. “Everyone wanted to throw their best,” said Robert, “but we all ended up throwing our average. It was hot and there was no wind.”

Robert’s coach, Patty Jerde, agreed. “Robert likes a cross wind, because he really gets it up in the air,” she added. “The bigger schools had wind on Fri., and their throws showed it.”

Patty also commented on the fact that Robert may continue throwing in college if the right opportunity presents itself. Robert has received interest from Mankato State and he is sure to get more offers after his performance at the state meet. “I told him to go for it. If he can get his college paid for, take advantage. He hasn’t reached his peak. He will get a coach that focuses on just discus and he will only get better.”

Jerry Netland from Fosston came into the meet as the favorite and showed why. He threw 165 feet, 4 inches and won the state championship. Jerry also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 57 feet, 31/4 inches.

Two other area participants, Al Sands and Jared Froelich from Floodwood, also had fine performances at the state track meet. Floodwood started its track and field program last year and is already turning out some fine athletes.

Al Sands qualified for the state meet in two events. He was the Section 7A champion in both the long and triple jumps. At state, Al tied for 10th place in the long jump with Josh Storm of Murray County Central. Both participants jumped 19 feet, two inches. Al also placed 14th in the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, 33/4 inches.

Jared Froelich participated in the 1600 meter run. He ran an excellent time of 4:36.41 and placed 15th in his last high school performance. Jared is a senior.
